1. Organic Foods Aren’t Better Than Non-Organic Foods
This common misconception is simply wrong. Organic foods do not contain harmful pesticides and fertilizers that can put your health at risk. They are also grown with methods that increase the nutritional density of the food. Produce pulls their nutrients out of the soil. Organic foods pull nutrients out of soil that is mixed with compost and manure and other vitamin and mineral heavy sources. While non-organic food is usually just beefed up with a fertilizer.
2. Organic Farmers Never Use Pesticides
Yes, organic farmers do use pesticides. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a list of pesticides allowed in organic foods. These pesticides are published by the National Organic Program, a regulatory body of the USDA. Certified organic produce has been grown specifically to keep pesticide exposure to an absolute minimum. The pesticides they use are also not made from harsh and dangerous chemicals. Their pesticide can be things like gluten, stick traps, and bacteria.
3. Organic Farms Are Small Family Farms
For the most part organic farmers do have small farms, but as the popularity of organic food continues to rise more and more producers have large farms. To be classified as an “organic” farm takes a lot of time, hard work and effort. The farmer must present a detailed plan of what substances he will be using on his farm to the National Organic Program of the USDA and to make sure everything he uses meets their criteria. Once approved the farm cannot use any synthetic or chemical pesticides for three years before his crop is certified as organic.
4. Organic Foods Can Be Eaten Without Washing
All produce, organic or not, should always be washed prior to eating. Remember the wind can carry pesticides through the air so organic fruits and veg may contain trace amounts of chemicals. Depending on where they are grown, they can also contain E.coli or salmonella from agricultural runoff. A light rinse in vinegar water will remove any residual chemicals, kill any salmonella and E coli bacteria, and clean the produce up so it shines.
